Item Description
In my nonstop search for all things related to the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry, I occasionally run across other good deals. Here is one such deal, a CDV backmarked to New Orleans of Major. Charles Mayers, Quartermaster of the 11th Wisconsin Infantry. The 11th was in my area here in southeast Missouri, losing several to guerrillas and disease in the eastern Ozark Mtns. I will include some copied letters from my files of members of the 11th while they were here as well as a three ringer dug at Reeve‘s Station, one of the larger camps occupied by the 11th. The 11th Wisconsin‘s true glory and baptism came during the Vicksburg Campaign where they participated in the bloody battles of Port Gibson and Champion Hill, then on to Vicksburg where the regiment suffered greatly. The regiment then proceeded to the Gulf where they operated mainly in the Trans-MS, ending the war in Fort Blakely. There is a new great book out on the regiment.
